At Med West Eyecare, all the doctors are Optometrist. They have had at least four years of education beyond college and are trained to diagnose and treat eye disease. An Ophthalmologist is an eye surgeon. They typically do not provide routine eye care. As medical doctors, ophthalmologists may order more extensive medical testing, such as an MRI or blood work, to aid in determining whether a general health problem is causing complications with the eyes. Ophthalmologists treat and monitor chronic eye conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. They also perform surgery on the eyes, such as repair of retinal detachment, cataract surgery, and laser vision correction.
An Optician is a person that is trained in fabrication and fitting of prescription eyewear, such as glasses or contact lenses. An optician is knowledgeable in lens materials and designs to enhance the appearance and comfort of glasses. They can recommend various lens designs, such as no-line bifocals, or special glasses for occupational use.
