How to put on Contact lenses

Preparation

Always wash and rinse hands thoroughly before handling your contacts. Dry them with a lint free towel.

Lens Insertion

  • Remove one of your lenses from the case. Develop the habit of always handling the same lens first to avoid mixing the right and left lenses.
  • Rinse the lens with fresh rinsing solution as directed
  • Using a lint free towel, dry the index finger of the hand you are going to use to place the contact lens in the eye. Then place the lens on the tip of your finger.
  • Check to make sure the lens is right side out.
  • Inspect the lens for debris or damage. Rinse the lens again if needed.
  • Place the middle finger of your other hand right above the lashes of the upper lid. Pull the upper lid up and press firmly against your brow to hold in place.
  • Using the middle finger of the hand holding the lens, pull the lower lid down.
  • With the lids held securely in place and looking straight ahead or slightly upward, gently place the lens on the eye.
  • Move the lens in a small circular motion on the eye to displace any air bubbles trapped underneath the lens. Remove your finger straight off the eye without releasing your lids.
  • Look downward, then release your lids. Blink once or twice while still looking down. Look straight ahead. The lens should now be centered on your eye.
  • If the lens is uncomfortable or if the vision is blurred, remove the lens and try reinsertion after carefully checking to see if the lens is damaged or inside out.
  • If discomfort persists, remove the lens and call your doctor.

Lens Removal

  • Wash and rinse your hands. Dry with a lint free towel.
  • Remove the cover from the right side of the case. There is less chance of mixing lenses if you remove and replace one cover at a time.
  • Fill your case with fresh disinfecting solution.
  • If your eye feels dry or if the lens does not readily move on the eye, place a drop of rewetting solution in your eye to lubricate the lens.
  • Look up and pull your lower lid down with your middle finger.
  • Place your index finger on the lens and gently slide it down to the lower white part of the eye.
  • As you hold the lens in place with your index finger, bring your thumb over and lightly squeeze the lens between your index finger and thumb. Lift the lens off of the eye. Be careful to avoid pinching the lens with your fingernails.
  • Follow your cleaning instructions before placing lens in case.
  • Repeat the procedures for the other eye.
